One historic place that is easy to get to from Paris is the forest of Compiégne. It was here that an oak train carriage was the setting for an important day in world history. November 11th, 1918 brought about the end of World War I. In this train car was where Marshal Ferdinand Foch signed an armistice with Germany. The exact train car was lost in 1945, after being transported and burned in Berlin.
