Historic Compiégne - Just A Short Trip From Paris

One historic place that is easy to get to from Paris is the forest of Compiégne. It was here that an oak train carriage was the setting for an important day in world history. November 11th, 1918 brought about the end of World War I. In this train car was where Marshal Ferdinand Foch signed an armistice with Germany. Twenty-two years passed to find the world in turmoil yet again. This time, Adolf Hitler had come on Germany's behalf and the tables were turned. The feared dictator forced France to sign the documents of their surrender to Nazi Germany.

The exact train car was lost in 1945, after being transported and burned in Berlin. Despite the horrible event that had occurred there more recently, many felt that a national landmark had been lost in the burning. The positive memory of the end of World War I overcame the terrible event of World War II, and the car was replaced. The Compagnie Internationale des Wagon-Lits donated a new car, which was renovated to appear exactly as the original had on that day in November of 1918.

Just An Hour Outside of Paris - Wonderful Walking and Hiking Trails

Today many visit the train car, although it is often overlooked by visitors to the country. The journey to Compiégne is an easy hour from Paris. The town also has two chateaus among timbered houses and cobblestone streets. Visitors can take in the curious museums, and the entire area is surrounded by 36,000 acres of forest. There are even accommodations available for anyone who wants to be close to Paris, but not directly in the city. So after you get your cheap tickets to Paris, consider staying here as well as staying in Paris itself.

The area is used as a hunting preserve, with 600 miles of hiking trails and roads for the adventurous visitor. A majority of creatures found in this area are harmless, falling along the lines of deer and smaller animals. However, visitors should remember to leave the wild boar alone!

Refugee For France's heroine - Joan d'Arc

History in Compiégne goes even farther back to the days of Joan of Arc. It was during 1430 that the doomed French heroine took cover in the area, prior to being captured. Today, a monument stands in her memory, depicting her bold figure with the colors of the French kings flowing at her side.

French Museums In A Natural Setting

The Museum of Historic Figurines features exhibits of over 42,000 figurines.
